SOSHO MOCHIDA, born in 1934 in Tokyo, is a printmaker and an emeritus professor at Osaka University of Arts. He is a main member of “Ge,” a representative contemporary art group in the Kansai area. His ongoing theme, the LOCATION series “Air,” involves the heating and carbonizing of felt, a process that blocks or rejects the air trapped within the felt. This act of branding is a primary task in his creation process. The areas containing and rejecting air construct the imagery on the canvas. The motif is an airplane, which, since childhood, everyone has dreamt of flying in at least once. The realization of flight has forced a transformation in our concepts of time and space, turning imagination and fantasy into reality and providing convenience in new perceptions and actions. However, this reality is not solely used for peaceful purposes but is also utilized in warfare. This choice is left up to us.
