About

Guided by the concept that “the wavelength of sensibility resonated by art echoes in people’s hearts like a single tone, generating new waves of culture,” ICHION CONTEMPORARY was founded in 2023 in Higashi-Umeda, Osaka, with the aim of becoming a hub for cultural exchange that connects Asia and the world.

Our gallery focuses on artists who pioneered avant-garde art in Japan, particularly in Osaka and the Kansai region. By spotlighting the innovation and cultural significance of their work, we strive to enhance their global recognition. Following the emergence of Abstract Expressionism in postwar America and Art Informel in France, Japan witnessed the rise of groundbreaking movements such as Gutai and Mono-ha. Among these, the Gutai Art Association stood out as a radical pursuit of “pure creation” beyond traditional art frameworks. Its avant-garde spirit not only shifted the trajectory of postwar Japanese art but also left a profound mark on the modern art landscape of East Asia. The originality inherent in Gutai still holds the potential to generate new values in contemporary society and serves as a bridge between past and future. At ICHION CONTEMPORARY, we believe it is both our mission and responsibility to carry forward the avant-garde legacy born in Osaka and Kansai.

Moreover, leveraging our network with international galleries and museums, we actively serve as a bridge between Japan and the world through artistic exchange. Through exhibitions and participation in art fairs, we disseminate the charm of regional culture, broaden the possibilities of art, and foster global cultural dialogue starting from Osaka.

We are also committed to supporting young artists by creating an environment where they can fully realize their potential and thrive on the international stage. By drawing upon the rich historical and cultural assets of the Osaka-Kansai region, we aim to grow as a dynamic platform for cultural exchange that connects generations and expands the social and economic impact of art.
